Heres a small interview that I did for the brilliant Imagine FX magazine.

With one foot firmly planted in the world of fantasy art, and the other rooted assuredly in that of comic books, Greg Staples has an approach to his work that’s versatile, observant and extremely creative. He has 10 years with 2000 AD under his belt, has done more than 170 illustrations for the Magic: The Gathering card game, and has created concept artwork for award-winning music videos, computer games and movies.

Signing in Chesterfield Saturday 17th July

I’m going to be doing a small signing this saturday at Comics and Collectables Unlimited, 12 Cavendish Street, Chesterfield on Saturday 17th July 12pm until 2pm to help celebrate Magic the Gatherings Core Set Launch. I dont really do many signings these days as I rarely get the time but since they are a new and local shop I thought it would be a nice way of meeting local collectors and fans.Feel free to bring comics along too if you would like them signed. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Frank Frazetta has passed away

One of my great hero’s has died at the age of 82. Frank Frazetta died of a stroke on May 10, 2010, in a hospital near his residence in Florida. He will always be remembered by me as an incredible inspiration and my condolences go out to his family. Here is a portrait I did and sent him for his 80th birthday. RIP master Frazetta.

BAD PLANET

I’ve just signed on to pencil and ink a six issue comic series called Bad Planet for
Raw Entertainment run by Thomas Jane and Tim Bradstreet.

Its the second run, the first had some amazing artists working on it so I feel pretty honoured.I’m reading the scripts now and its gonna be a lot of fun,I’m really excited to get back to telling stories and to getting back to comics….I’ll keep ya updated!

Where Did It All Start?

Born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire in 1970, Greg Staples started illustrating as soon as he could pick up a pencil.

From a very young age, Greg had an interest in comics and drew anything and everything. Although Greg was highly credited at school for his artistic accomplishments, when it was time to train formally he was told ‘there was no money in illustration’ by his tutors. So on leaving school, he decided to train as an architect. However, his ambition to become an illustrator was so strong, he decided to quit after three years to pursue his passion.

Over the next eighteen months, whilst managing two part-time jobs, Greg worked hard to put together a portfolio that he felt would impress the editors of British comic 2000AD.

The hard work paid off. In 1990 he got his first break when well-known fantasy artist Simon Bisley spotted his talent and introduced him to the then editor of 2000AD Richard Burton. A week later, Greg received a try-out script which was well received and he was then offered the chance to draw Britain’s premier comic strip character Judge Dredd.

His work on Judge Dredd marked the beginning of Greg’s career as an artist and illustrator and over the past fifteen years Greg has worked on many projects ranging from War of the Worlds with Jeff Wayne to Magic: The Gathering and is also the co-founder of visual effects company Ark VFX.
